Air traffic controller suspended after planes nearly collide at Mumbai airport – AeroTime

Two aircraft narrowly avoided a collision on the runway of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai.

The incident occurred on June 8, 2024, when an IndiGo flight landed on the runway while an Air India flight was taking off.

A video clip of the incident, shared on social media platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), shows the Air India aircraft, flying AI657 from Mumbai airport to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV), taking off when the IndiGo aircraft, flying 6E5053 from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR), touched down.

Both aircraft were A320neo.

According to flight tracking site Flightradar24, the two planes were 509 meters apart laterally at their closest point and were 511 meters apart when the Air India plane took off. The IndiGo jet touched down three seconds after takeoff.

An IndiGo spokesperson told the Times of India that the IndiGo flight from Indore was given permission to land by the air traffic control tower.

“The pilot in command continued the approach and landing and followed the instructions (of air traffic control),” the spokesman was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, Air India said that air traffic control had cleared its aircraft to enter the runway and then take off.

The Deccan Herald reported that the air traffic controller involved in the incident had been removed from duty by India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation and an investigation had been launched.
