Aurora Police Officers Placed on Leave After Shooting | News

Editor’s note: The Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified the person shot as 28-year-old Jose Rodriguez-Balderrama. He suffered multiple gunshot wounds and ruled his death a homicide.

Two Aurora police officers were placed on administrative leave following a brief chase and shooting Saturday evening.

The shooting was reported in the 1400 block of Clinton Street, a few blocks north of Lowry Park.

Upon arrival at the scene, a victim was discovered with a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to a nearby hospital, according to police.

According to Aurora police, officers identified a suspect driving a red Mustang that sped away, sparking a pursuit.

According to police, the suspect returned to the scene of the original shooting at some point.

Interim Aurora Police Chief Heather Morris said in a news conference Saturday evening that what happened after the suspect returned to the scene remains unclear at this point in the investigation.

Morris mentioned that at one point two officers fired their weapons at the suspect. The unidentified man received medical attention at the scene before being taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Morris added that it was still uncertain whether the suspect aimed or fired his weapon at the officers before they opened fire. None of the officers involved were injured.

According to the Aurora Police Department, both officers have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard department policy.

Aurora police have launched both criminal and internal investigations, and the shooting is also being investigated by the Critical Incident Response Team led by the 18th Judicial District.

As of Sunday, no further information about the victim or suspect had been provided.
