On Monday, typical summer weather returns, with possible showers and thunderstorms

LAKE CHARLES, Louisiana (KPLC) – SWLA has had consistently hot and dry weather all weekend, but rain is expected to return this week.

Some patches of fog may form around sunrise this morning and become a little more dense. Remember to be careful on the roads when visibility is reduced!

Monday will start still warm and humid and the coast may even see a few isolated showers before midday, but rain will likely return later in the day. The combination of a weak front slowly moving in from the north and a weakening area of high pressure will increase the chance of rain again. Any rain that does develop should look about like we normally expect at this time of year, with the possibility of isolated showers or a few thunderstorms from late morning into the afternoon. Not everyone will experience a shower or thunderstorm, but it’s a good idea to have an umbrella handy if you’re out and about later in the day.

This front may linger on Tuesday, meaning a few additional showers or thunderstorms could develop. Additionally, a disturbance in the upper atmosphere will likely approach the area on Wednesday, triggering some isolated showers or thunderstorms. The other effects of the front will be a possible reduction in humidity and slightly lower low temperatures. These values could range between 18 and 21 degrees by Wednesday morning.

What will happen later in the week is even more uncertain. This weak front will eventually stall south of the area later in the week, and models suggest less rain will come through Thursday and Friday. At the same time, a tropical disturbance will likely move into the eastern Gulf and send a wave of moisture there. If trends hold, that would keep most of the moisture and rain east of the area through the first half of next weekend. However, some long-range models suggest some of that moisture could drift closer by the end of the weekend, and we will issue an initial alert that rain chances could increase again by then.

We don’t expect any development in the tropics next week. If you’re wondering what the chances of development are from the disturbance in the Gulf, fortunately it’s very low as there will be strong upper-level winds. And even if something does form, it would likely be weak and disorganized. Of course, we’ll keep you posted if anything changes, and we’ll still be monitoring it to see if the chance of rain increases next week.
