Fatal bicycle accident in Ocean County under investigation

Oceania

By: Tracie Carter

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer and Jackson Township Police Chief Matthew Kunz have announced that a joint investigation is underway into a fatal car crash that killed a bicyclist on Farmingdale Road around 12:00 p.m. on June 9.

Ocean County officials said the incident occurred when a westbound 2017 Audi A4 attempted to avoid a head-on collision with a red SUV by swerving into the oncoming lane.

This maneuver resulted in the Audi hitting a cyclist.

The driver of the Audi then oversteered, which led to a collision with a tree. The SUV involved in the accident did not stop, continued driving east and fled the scene of the accident.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver of the Audi was taken to CentraState Medical Center in Freehold, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities are currently actively searching for a red or maroon Hyundai SUV that may have been involved in the incident.

The vehicle was presumably driven by a white woman accompanied by a small boy.

The investigation is being conducted by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes and Negligent Manslaughter Unit and the Jackson Township Police Department.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding this tragic incident to call Sergeant Brad Frank of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, extension 3688, or Sergeant Edward Travisano of the Jackson Township Police Department at 732-928-1111.
