Sunriver Police are holding a public forum on plans to install two automatic license plate readers

SUNRIVER, Ore. (KTVZ) – Sunriver Police are hosting a public forum Monday afternoon to share information and answer questions about the planned installation of automatic license plate readers at two locations in the resort community.

Flock Safety’s solar-powered cameras will hopefully be installed by July at Sunriver’s entrance at Cottonwood Road and South Century Drive near the main “waterfall circle,” officials said in a June article in Sunriver Scene, which is published by the Sunriver Owners Association.

The presentation is scheduled for Monday at 4:00 p.m. at SHARC (Sunriver Homeowners Aquatic and Recreation Center).

Police Chief Stephen Lopez said the expansion will help fight crime by notifying police officers when license plates appear in the National Crime Information Center database and are registered as stolen, involved in a crime or associated with an Amber Alert or Silver Alert.

“These can and will help combat some of the criminal activity both in Sunriver and regionally,” said Lopez, who spoke to the SROA and Sunriver Service District boards last month.

“Sunriver will be one of several other law enforcement agencies (in Deschutes County) to implement these readers,” the police chief said.
