MONONA, Wis. (WKOW) — Monona police stopped a driver traveling 100 mph on Highway 12, according to a news release Sunday.

Vehicle stopped for speeding

The press release states that this happened in a 55 mph zone. Officials say the vehicle also did not have a proper temporary registration.

Officers say the driver, Decarlos Hawkins, 36, was slow to respond to the traffic stop but eventually did so. Hawkins initially did not respond when the officer asked her to get out of the car, but after several requests, he finally got out, officers say.

Hawkins showed signs of impairment, including smelling of alcohol and slurring his speech. The release states that he failed to comply with the officer’s request to perform a sobriety test.

As a result, Hawkins was arrested for drunk driving and had a blood draw, with results pending.

Hawkins was arrested for a third offense of the OWI statute. He is free on bail from an open case in Walworth County.

Monona police also noted in the press release that they assisted Madison police in a shooting early Sunday morning.
