CHP: Teenager killed in car crash in Northern California, woman seriously injured

(FOX40.COM) — A 19-year-old Northern California man died Sunday night after a crash on a Sutter County highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

According to the CHP, the 19-year-old Marysville man was driving his 2003 Volkswagen north on Highway 113, south of Leiser Road, when he attempted to pass two vehicles in front of him by moving into the southbound lane.

As he began to pass the vehicles in front of him, the Volkswagen struck a black Mercedes traveling in the southbound lanes. To avoid the crash, the Mercedes swerved to the right while the Volkswagen swerved to the left, and the vehicles collided head-on, according to CHP.

“At the accident scene, the northbound lanes are marked with a solid yellow line and the southbound lanes are marked with dashed yellow lines,” CHP said.

The driver of the Volkswagen was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, CHP said. The driver of the Mercedes, a 37-year-old woman from Woodland, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries to her legs.

CHP added that there were no passengers in either vehicle.

It is not suspected that drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident.
