CLINTON, N.C. (WNCN) – The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office reports that one of their deputies was stabbed, a woman was shot and a dog was killed following an incident in Salemburg early Tuesday morning.

At 2:44 a.m., the sheriff’s office said its deputies were dispatched to a report of a suspicious person at 403 S. Main St. in Salemburg. A homeowner reported that a woman driving a green Saturn car was parked on his property and repeatedly honked the vehicle’s horn.

The caller also reported seeing the woman outside her car with a knife and shouting, “Someone was after her.”

When Sampson County officers arrived, they saw the woman driving away. Officers attempted to stop the woman and pursue her into Bladen County.

Officers with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office deployed stop sticks and successfully stopped the vehicle on East Oak Street, just outside of White Lake.

While officers tried to arrest the woman, the sheriff’s office said she pulled out a knife and stabbed a Sampson County officer in the leg.

Officials said officers from Sampson County and Bladen County fired their service weapons at the woman. A dog at the scene was also killed in the shooting.

The woman was taken by ambulance to the New Hanover County Emergency Room to be treated for injuries sustained in the incident. The injured Sampson County deputy was transported by an officer to the Sampson County Emergency Room. The deputy was treated and released.

“This incident highlights the unpredictability of law enforcement tasks and the risks associated with them. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work diligently to ensure public safety and maintain the integrity of our law enforcement efforts,” said Sampson County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Marcus Smith.

The Sampson County Sheriff’s Office said the crime is an ongoing investigation and further information, including the names of the suspect and the officers involved, is being withheld at this time.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol for an officer-involved shooting.

“We are deeply grateful for the prompt and effective assistance provided by our colleagues at the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office during this challenging and dynamic situation. We ask for continued prayers for both agencies, our deputies, and a successful recovery for all involved,” said Sampson County Sheriff Jimmy Thornton.
