Arrest for rape after attack in city park

A man was arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was attacked in a city centre park.

Part of East Park in Southampton was cordoned off after reports emerged that a woman in her 40s was raped at around 05:00 BST on Thursday.

A spokesman for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police confirmed that a 22-year-old man from London had been arrested on suspicion of rape.

The man remains in police custody and the woman is being assisted by specialist officers.

The police spokesman said there was an increased police presence in the area over the weekend following the incident.
