Ryan Garcia arrested for vandalism at Beverly Hills Hotel

Boxer Ryan Garcia was arrested in California for vandalism after allegedly damaging a Beverly Hills hotel.

In a statement to PEOPLE, the Beverly Hills Police Department confirmed that officers arrested Garcia, 25, on Saturday, June 8, after receiving a call about an “intoxicated individual” at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard.

“During the investigation, the intoxicated individual was identified as Ryan Garcia,” Lt. Andrew Myers said in the statement to PEOPLE.

“After obtaining statements from hotel management, it was determined that Mr. Garcia was a registered guest of the hotel and had caused damage to a guest room and hallway of the hotel,” Myers added.

After hotel management requested his arrest for criminal damage, Garcia was arrested and taken to a local hospital for medical treatment, Myers said.

A video obtained by TMZ allegedly shows Garcia – who won the interim WBC lightweight title in 2021 – being led out of the hotel in handcuffs while wearing a bicycle helmet covering his face.

The outlet had previously reported that another incident occurred at the hotel earlier this week, where authorities were called to check on her welfare after one of his relatives said Garcia needed help.

Garcia’s attorney, Darin T. Chavez, told PEOPLE in a statement that the arrest came at an “extraordinarily difficult time for Ryan” following recent reports that his mother had been having health problems.

Boxing fans speculated that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer after Garcia made a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this week. In one post, Garcia wrote, “Breast cancer is stupid.”

His lawyer continued: “First and foremost, we ask everyone to respect Ryan’s privacy during this difficult time. Ryan has spoken openly about his mental health struggles over the years and he is currently battling tremendous emotional distress. The support and understanding of fans and the public is critical as he navigates these personal challenges.”

“We are working diligently to provide Ryan with the resources he needs,” Chavez added. “Our team is committed to ensuring he receives the appropriate help and care to ensure both his immediate and long-term well-being. We ask for your continued support and compassion as Ryan focuses on his family and health at this time.”

The hotel, whose rooms and suites can cost several thousand dollars a night, also confirmed the incident in a statement to PEOPLE, writing that it is “fully cooperating with local authorities.”

“The well-being and safety of our guests is of utmost importance and we continue to make every effort to ensure that all practices and standards meet strict safety standards,” said a spokesperson for the Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.

The news of the lightweight boxer’s arrest also comes at a turbulent time in his professional career.

Shortly after bringing home a non-title majority decision victory over super lightweight champion Devin Haney, Garcia tested positive for a banned substance on April 20, according to USA TODAY.

According to the source, Garcia faces a possible suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission.
