Man shot by Edmonton police officer triggers regulatory investigation – Edmonton

Edmonton police have asked the independent police oversight agency to investigate after one of their officers shot and killed a man in the city’s McCauley neighbourhood.

On Sunday morning, officers were called around 4:40 a.m. to a reported robbery at a home near the corner of 109th Avenue and 93rd Street.

In a press release, Edmonton police said a 33-year-old man attacked another man in the home.

“When police arrived, the male suspect exited the home with a weapon and a confrontation ensued between the suspect and police, during which officers fired their firearms,” ​​EPS said Sunday.

“The 33-year-old man was hit and suffered life-threatening injuries. He was treated and taken to hospital where he is currently in a stable condition.”

A shot also hit a nearby house, but no one inside the house was injured. There were also no other civilians or EPS officers injured.

Local resident Cathy Cummings told Global News she was drinking coffee in her living room when she heard what sounded like two men arguing.

Then she heard about seven to nine shots. Her surveillance camera also recorded the shots.

“I ducked,” she said. “I just thought it was a ricochet because it sounded so close, so I just put my head down as a precaution.”

Around noon, she was taking a walk and saw a fire truck spraying down the sidewalk.

Cummings said she often hears gunshots in her neighborhood.

“It’s scary,” she said. “This is too close to home.”

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is currently investigating the police officer-involved shooting, Edmonton police said.
