George Russell called to the race stewards after the award ceremony in Canada

Post-race celebrations for Mercedes F1 driver George Russell were interrupted as he was summoned before FIA stewards over a possible breach of racing rules during a tense moment at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The incident that targeted the British driver occurred at exactly 15:40 on lap 64, when he attempted to overtake Oscar Piastri. During this attempt, contact occurred between the two drivers. The collision caused Russell to go off the track, losing a position to his teammate Lewis Hamilton.

The official letter from the sports commissioners states:

“The driver and the team representative must report to the race stewards at 17:10 regarding the following incident:

“No. / Driver: 63 – George Russell

“Reason: Alleged infringement of Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2 d) of the FIA International Sporting Code – incident between cars 63 and 81 at 15:40.”

The exact details of the summons and the potential consequences have complex implications not only for Russell but also for the Mercedes team.

Russell celebrated in third place on the podium after starting the race from pole position. Joining the Mercedes driver on the podium were Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who crossed the finish line first and second respectively. The decision by race control could result in Russell losing his third place.

After the race, Russell commented:

“It felt like a missed opportunity. We were really fast in the intermediate steps at the beginning, then Lando came through.

“Then we switched back to the slicks. I made a few mistakes out there, pushed myself to the limit and paid the price for it.”

“Still the first podium of the year. We had a really fast car this weekend and it was really fun to be in the fight for victory. That’s what Formula 1 is all about and that’s why we race.”
