Possible tornado damage is being investigated in Ligonier

The National Weather Service said it was investigating whether tornadoes damaged homes and trees in Ligonier early Wednesday morning.

Crews are traveling across the region to check damage caused by the severe weather in Westmoreland County, Hancock County, W.Va. and eastern Ohio, said Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist at the NWS office in Pittsburgh.

At 3:10 a.m. the NWS issued a tornado warning for Westmoreland County, specifically between Derry and Ligonier.

Significant tree damage was seen in Ligonier, Hendricks said.

“We had a possible tornado over in Hancock County, West Virginia, and a possible one in eastern Ohio,” he said.

In Fairhaven, several homes were damaged and one person was injured.

Tornado warnings were issued overnight, moving east from Ohio to the eastern edge of Westmoreland County, beginning around 12:55 p.m. and ending around 3:45 a.m

“The last one was generally over probably a quarter to four,” Hendricks said. “The storm was pretty much over in the area (by then).”
