Former Florida baseball pitcher Hurston Waldrep will pitch for the Atlanta Braves in his MLB debut on Sunday

A year ago at this time, former Florida baseball pitcher Hurston Waldrep propelled the Gators into the College World Series in a super regional victory over South Carolina.

On Sunday, Waldrep will make his big league debut for the Atlanta Braves against the Washington Nationals.

Waldrep enjoyed a rapid rise in the Braves system, and was drafted 24th overall in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft by Atlanta last July. In his first half-season of pro ball, Waldrep, a Thomasville, Ga., native, moved from Single-A to Triple-A and finished with a 1.53 ERA in 29 1/3 innings.

Opening the 2024 campaign at Double-A Mississippi, Waldrep made nine starts before being promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett for a one-start appearance. He totaled 55 1/3 ball frames ERA of 3.09 across both levels while producing a 1.36 WHIP and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Waldrep played a key role in propelling the Florida Gators to the 2023 College World Series and the SEC title. He earned second-team All-America honors (D1Baseball) and set the UF program record for strikeouts per nine (13.8) in a career after making 19 starts with a career record of 10-3 in 101 2/3 innings. Waldrep posted a 4.16 ERA and .228 batting average to go along with 156 strikeouts – the second-highest single-season total in team history.
