Hurston Waldrep set to make MLB debut with Atlanta Braves

ATLANTA, Ga. (WALB) – Less than a year after appearing in the College World Series, Thomasville native Hurston Waldrep will make his MLB debut with the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, June 9 against the Washington Nationals at 1:35 p.m. Max Fried was originally scheduled to start Sunday’s game. He saw his release pushed back to Tuesday to give him a little extra rest.

The right-handed pitcher was selected 24th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft to his in-state team, the Atlanta Braves. Waldrep recently made his first AAA start this year, striking out 11 batters and one walk in six innings. In May, he finished with a 1.19 ERA over five starts. He had 31 strikeouts with seven walks. He hadn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since April 20.

Waldrep will be the second draft pick in the last three years to debut with the Braves. Right-hander Spencer Schwellenbach, selected in the second round of the 2021 draft, has made two major league starts since being called up in late May.
