Convicted rapist released after nearly three decades in prison

Convicted rapist Wayne Wilmot has been released from prison after nearly three decades behind bars.

The 51-year-old was only 15 years old when he and four other young people took part in the kidnapping, rape and murder of a 20-year-old Sydney Bank employee Janine Balding in 1988.

Wilmot, one of the men imprisoned for the crime, was sentenced to nearly ten years in prison for his complicity in her kidnapping and assault.

After his release on parole, Wilmot attacked four more women in the late 1990s and was sent back to prison.

Balding’s family were informed that Wilmot would be released today and told victims’ advocates of their fears that he may reoffend.

“The victims have been put under enormous pressure and are completely upset as a result,” victim advocate Howard Brown told 9News Sydney.

“Their real concern is not their own safety, but the safety of others.”

“Because they have already seen what Wilmot is capable of and they don’t want anyone else to have to go through a similar experience.”

Since his release, Wilmot has been living in a supervised facility under strict conditions.

An application for an extended administrative probation order will be heard in court later this month.
