Driver dies when pickup truck leaves South Carolina road, Highway Patrol says

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, one person was killed in a traffic accident on a road in the Midlands on Sunday morning.

The single-vehicle crash occurred around 2 a.m. in Kershaw County, said Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway.

According to Ridgeway, a 2014 Toyota pickup truck was traveling north on Veterans Row, near U.S. 1 in the Elgin area.

Near the intersection with Chestnut Road, the pickup truck veered off the left side of Veterans Row and struck a railing, Ridgeway said.

According to Ridgeway, the driver died at the scene of the accident.

The identity of the driver has not been publicly released by the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office.

No further injuries were reported.

There was no information about whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Information on why the pickup truck left the road was not available, but the crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

According to the state Department of Public Safety, at least 386 people have died on South Carolina roads through June 2, 2024. Last year, 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina, according to DPS.

At least four people died in crashes in Kershaw County in 2024, according to DPS data. In 2023, 11 deaths were reported in the county, DPS said.
