Ranger died on duty in Bryce Canyon

BRYCE CANYON, Utah – Last night around 11:30 p.m., Park Ranger Tom Lorig died after tripping and falling while on duty.

At the time, Ranger Lorig was working at the annual astronomy festival in Bryce Canyon. According to the Bryce Canyon press release, while guiding a visitor to a shuttle bus, Ranger Lorig fell and struck his head on a large rock.

When the visitor noticed that Lorig was no longer responsive, he immediately notified a ranger. Medically trained passersby, park rangers and paramedics helped to care for him, but were unable to resuscitate the 78-year-old Lorig.

Park ranger Jim Ireland said, “Tom Lorig served Bryce Canyon, the National Park Service and the public as a park ranger, building connections between the world and these special places he loved.”

Tom Lorig worked as a nurse for 40 years. He then spent over 10 years working as a park ranger in 14 different national parks.
