Security guard jailed for raping woman who mistook his car for a taxi

A security guard took a woman to a parking lot where he was working as a security guard and raped her after she got into his car because she thought it was her pre-ordered taxi.

Sola Austin Warikwah, 39, was jailed for the attack. The attack occurred after the 25-year-old woman got into his car on London’s Embankment in the early hours of April 22, 2019.

She mistakenly thought a taxi had been ordered to take her home. Instead, Warikwah drove her to a parking garage in Victoria, where he raped her.

The building was one of the places he patrolled at night as part of his job in central London.

The woman managed to send a message to a friend saying: “I was raped. I feel sick. This taxi is not taking me home. I am scared.”

She managed to escape from the vehicle and photograph the rapist. Police were able to identify Warikwah using CCTV, phone and vehicle surveillance. He was arrested at his home two days after the rape.

Warikah, from St John’s, south-east London, was sentenced to seven years in prison, suspended for three years, at Southwark Crown Court on December 17.

A sexual assault prevention order was issued against him and he was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Detective Sergeant John Paton, of the Safeguarding Unit’s Westminster Sapphire Team, said: “Sola Austin Warikwah is a predatory sex offender who targeted a vulnerable, unsuspecting woman travelling alone.

“Thanks to the courage and quick reaction of the victim, the help of the public and the credibility of the investigation, a dangerous criminal was brought to a prison where he no longer poses a threat to women.

“I sincerely hope that today’s sentence will encourage other victims of sexual crimes to come forward.”

The Met urged all victims of sexual crime to report it as soon as possible.
