Cruise passenger dies after overboard incident at MSC Cruises

The only one overboard from MSC Cruises’ MSC Euribia early Thursday, June 6, 2024, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Although initial reports indicated that the individual – now identified as a male passenger on the cruise ship – was rescued from the water in less than an hour, he did not survive the incident.

The man was pulled from the water and taken to Haukeland Hospital in Bergen, about 80 kilometers south of the Sognefjord area where the incident was reported.

Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The exact cause of death has not yet been disclosed and it is not known if other medical conditions or unusual circumstances contributed to the man falling overboard.

The incident has been classified as “suspicious,” but it could also indicate an intentional fall overboard, a domestic dispute, a crime, an accident, or other unknown circumstances.

The water temperature in the Sognefjord is currently 13-14 degrees Celsius. At this temperature, a person in reasonably good health should be able to survive for 1-6 hours without the risk of hypothermia being extremely high. However, general health, protective equipment and physical abilities play a role in the overall survival time.

Very few details were known about the man, except that he was a passenger on MSC Euribia He is not a Norwegian citizen or a crew member and was travelling with his wife on the cruise ship. Local reports say the man was in his “late 50s”. No other passengers or crew members on the ship were reported missing.

Cruise lines do not often release detailed information in such cases. This lack of information is intended to protect the privacy of the individual concerned, their family members and traveling companions, and others affected by the incident.

Assistance can be provided to crew members and other persons on board MSC Euribia who are affected by the situation. It can be very difficult to adjust to such a tragic incident during what should have been a wonderful cruise vacation.

MSC Euribia was on a 7-day Northern Europe cruise from Kiel, Germany, with stops in various Norwegian ports and time for disembarkation. This cruise ended on Saturday, June 8, and the ship has already continued on to her next voyage.

Local authorities will no doubt conduct a full investigation into the incident, as is standard practice in any situation involving a vessel overboard. The investigation will include interviews with crew members, a review of onboard surveillance and security footage, and an autopsy of the deceased. The vessel will not be required to suspend operations during the investigation.

The ship is currently sailing various routes in Northern Europe until mid-October, with departures from Kiel and Copenhagen. After that, the ship will be moved to the Middle East in the Arabian Gulf, with departures from Dubai and Abu Dhabi and visits to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain. MSC Euribia will remain in the Middle East until April 2025.
