Woman and 4-year-old girl killed in shooting on Florida’s Turnpike

A woman and a 4-year-old girl are dead after a shooting late Friday night on the Florida Turnpike in Hollywood, officials say.

Shortly before midnight, the Florida Highway Patrol notified the Broward Sheriff’s Office that they had responded to a shooting in the northbound lanes of the highway near mile marker 49, south of the Hollywood Boulevard exit, Claudinne Caro-Guaraldi, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Office, said in an email.

When police arrived, they found a woman and a girl in a car, both with gunshot wounds. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Hollywood Fire Department took the woman to the hospital, where she died.

The sheriff’s office did not provide any information about what led to the shooting or any possible suspects.

At the request of the FHP, detectives from the BSO Homicide Unit are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information should contact Broward County Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS.
