Government on Kinmen calls for restraint after drone incident in China

Taipei, June 8 (CNA) The Kinmen County government on Saturday urged Chinese authorities to prevent its citizens from flying civilian drones and dropping leaflets or other unidentified objects over the Taiwan-controlled islands.

In a press release, the Kinmen government condemned the drone operator for such actions and said it had asked local police to investigate the case.

This statement comes after a Chinese TikTok channel live-streamed videos of a drone allegedly entering Kinmen’s airspace and dropping unidentified objects, including leaflets, in the island’s Mashan region for two days in a row.

Such actions could not only have resulted in injuries to people on the ground, but could also have seriously endangered flight safety, the Kinmen government said, calling on the Chinese authorities to deter their citizens from such illegal behavior.

Local police spotted an unidentified drone flying over the county police office in the afternoon, but when officers attempted to bring down the drone with their jammers, it quickly flew toward Xiaoximen and Houhu, the Kinmen government said.

The Kinmen Defense Command also said on Saturday that it was closely monitoring the situation and the military was ready to take necessary countermeasures in accordance with standard procedures.

Meanwhile, the command said the military had reviewed the videos and determined that the Chinese drone did not fly near a military base on Friday.
