Man in his 70s dies in incident on farm

A man in his 70s has died and two other people were injured in an incident on a farm in County Londonderry.

Police said the incident, which was not treated as suspicious, occurred on Cullyrammer Road outside Garvagh on Thursday.

According to BBC News NI, workers were working on the wall of a silo pit when the accident occurred.

It is believed that father and son were involved in the incident and that the man killed was not the farmer.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it had dispatched three rescue teams to the scene and that the two injured men had been taken to hospital.

One of the men was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, the other was transported by road to Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

DUP’s Michelle Knight-McQuillan says community is in shock (BBC)

Councillor Michelle Knight-McQuillan of the Democratic Unionist Party said the Garvagh community was shocked.

“With this accident today, a dark cloud has fallen over this community,” said Ms Knight-McQuillan.

“This is a rural and close-knit community and like most farming communities, everyone knows everyone.

“The community will undoubtedly care for the families of the bereaved and injured.”

Police said their officers would assist the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) with the investigation.

A HSE spokesman said they were aware of an incident in the Garvagh area and were at the scene.
