1 dead after nighttime crash and fire in Suffolk – The Virginian-Pilot

According to the Suffolk Fire Department, one person was killed early Saturday morning as a result of a tractor accident and subsequent fire in Suffolk.

Just before 3 a.m., Suffolk emergency crews were dispatched to the 4400 block of Holland Road following a downed power line and brush fire. Upon arrival, Engine 7 increased readiness as a large fire was breaking out in the area.

As crews from Engine 7 began fighting the fire, they discovered a tractor that had been hauling a burning cargo container. The tractor had veered off the road and struck several trees. The tractor was on fire, but the cargo container – which had tipped over – was not.

At 3:30 a.m., firefighters found the fire under control. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found a dead person in the tractor’s cab. The tank had burst.

Firefighters are currently trying to identify the contents of the cargo container. However, the contents of the cargo container were not affected by the fire and do not pose a danger, reports Suffolk Fire & Rescue.

Suffolk Police are investigating the cause of the accident and the Fire Commissioner’s Office is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
