6-year-old girl dies in bizarre accident while playing with brother on vacation after a piece of metal pierces her skull

A six-year-old girl has died after a piece of metal pierced her skull in a bizarre accident.

Lucy Morgan was playing badminton with her 10-year-old brother during a family lakeside vacation in Limerick, Maine, when the tragedy occurred.

When her older sister hit the shuttlecock, the racket disintegrated and aluminum shards flew around, fatally hitting Lucy in the head on June 1.

Father Jesse and his wife Bethany said the family were eating lunch by the lake when they heard a piercing scream.

“Bethany and I were relaxing in the back when we heard screaming,” Jesse said.

“Due to a bizarre accident involving a racket that broke during the downswing, a sharp piece had penetrated Lucy’s skull while she was sitting on the sidelines, causing a catastrophic injury.”

The unconscious and unresponsive girl was flown by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where doctors attempted to treat Lucy’s injuries.

But in the early hours of June 5, Lucy’s family stood at her bedside and sang her favorite song – “He Will Hold Me Fast” – before she passed away.

“This is such a sad, tragic situation,” said Maine State Police.

“Our hearts break for the family.”

Jesse, a pastor at Green Pond Bible Chapel in Rockaway Township, documented the heartbreaking ordeal on his church blog during the four days doctors tried to save Lucy’s life.

He recounted how he broke the devastating news to his three young children.

“When we entered the hospital room that the staff had generously provided us with, three little people were fast asleep,” he wrote.

“It hit us so hard at that moment that there were only three and not four.

“We shared the news as gently as possible, but this is a conversation you never want to have with a 4-, 8- and 10-year-old.

“Shiloh immediately broke down. She and Lucy are best friends and the middle girls.

“She couldn’t imagine sleeping alone in her room.

“AJ was slow to understand and just wanted to be held, then he fell into his typical 4-year-old machine gun questioning style.

“Silas tried to hold back as a tough guy, but then burst into tears: ‘I don’t want to be a family of five.'”

“We are holding on, but we cannot imagine life without Lucy-Goose.”

A GoFundMe.com fund to support the family has raised more than $93,000 from over 850 donors.

Lucy’s funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. ET and will be streamed live on www.greenpondbible.org.
