2 people, including police officer, killed in shooting in southern Arizona

Two people, including a police officer, were killed in a shooting in southern Arizona early Saturday morning.

Five people were also injured in the incident, including another officer.

The shooting occurred around 2 a.m. local time when officers were dispatched to a “quiet at a home,” according to the Gila River Police Department’s Facebook page. The incident occurred in the Gila River Indian Community, a Native American reservation 35 miles southeast of Phoenix.

Several shots were fired during the riots, which police said involved a “large crowd.”

Among those shot were two Gila River police officers and four other people, police said.

Officer Joshua Briese and another person, whose identity has not yet been publicly released, succumbed to their injuries.

The other officer is still in serious but stable condition in hospital. The three other injured people are also being treated in hospitals, police said.

Officer Briese was still in field training and had only been with the department for less than a year.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with these officers, their families and all those affected by this tragic incident,” the police department said.

The department is working with the FBI to further investigate the incident.

The Gila River Indian Community has a population of 14,000, including members of the Pima and Maricopa tribes.
