Iddat case: Bushra Bibi applies to IHC for suspension of sentence

Bushra’s lawyer calls for suspension of February 3 verdict due to “weak” evidence

ISLAMABAD:

Bushra Bibi, wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, filed a stay petition in the Iddat case before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday.

Five days before the February 8 elections, the court indicted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in an illegal marriage case after Bushra’s ex-husband Khawar Farid Manika accused them of having an “illicit relationship”.

The petition, filed by Bushra’s legal adviser Salman Safdar, urged the court to stay the February 3 verdict that sentenced the former prime minister and his wife to seven years in prison. The petition also sought the issuance of a bail order.

Citing “weaknesses” in the evidence, the complaint alleges that the verdict cannot be justified on such flawed grounds. Therefore, the sentence imposed by the court cannot be upheld.

The plea further alleges that Bushra was subjected to worse prison conditions for political reasons, which underscores the urgent need to address this plea. Since the plea is already being considered in the District Court, Bushra urges the court to hear it promptly and act decisively.
