Police investigate vandalism at church in Brentwood – NBC Bay Area

Police are investigating after a Brentwood church was defaced with graffiti making politically charged claims about where the church invests its money.

The incident occurred Wednesday evening at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near the area of ​​Highland Way and Sand Creek Road.

According to police, the suspects sprayed unfounded claims that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was investing in genocide.

On Thursday, cleaners were called to remove the graffiti from the building.

“It’s just sad to see the crackdown on churches that are there just for worship,” said Derek Rossi, a Brentwood resident and also a member of the church.

Rossi added that the other members were disappointed with the damage to the church. The suspects never got inside but managed to break two windows.

Rossi said he was glad church officials took action after members like him contacted the bishop to have the graffiti removed before members attend sacrament meeting this weekend.

NBC Bay Area reached out to the bishop for comment on Friday but did not receive a response.

As police continue their investigation, Rossi hopes any problems with the church can be resolved through dialogue rather than vandalism.

“If you have a problem or want to discuss it with the church leadership, we can have a conversation and discuss all of your concerns. Let’s talk about it in person and see how we can address it,” he said.
