Shabana Azmi on the Kangana incident

Hyderabad: Two days after actress and politician Kangana Ranaut was slapped by a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) policeman at Chandigarh airport, veteran actress Shabana Azmi reacted to the incident by saying that people will not be safe if security officials take the law into their own hands.

“I have no great love for Kangana Ranaut. But I cannot join this chorus of celebrations for ‘the slap’. When the security personnel start taking the law into their own hands, none of us can be safe,” Azmi posted on X.

Ranaut was on her way to Delhi for her flight from Chandigarh airport when the incident took place. The video clip of this incident quickly went viral and created a stir on social media.

Ranaut later posted a video statement on social media about the incident, saying, “I am safe. I am perfectly fine. The incident took place at the security check-in. The security guard waited until I got through and then came from the side and hit me. She started hurling abusive words. When I asked her why she hit me, she said, ‘I support farmers.’ I am safe but my only concern is how we should deal with this rising terrorism in Punjab.”

Kulwinder Kaur, the CISF constable who slapped Kangana Ranaut, said, “I slapped her because I support the farmers’ protests.” During the farmers’ protests, she said, they used to sit there and demand a hundred rupees. Should she go and sit there? My mother was sitting there protesting when she made that statement.

A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against the CISF officer and she was suspended.
