Former Metropolitan Police officer sexually assaulted a colleague while on duty

A former police officer has been jailed after sexually assaulting a colleague while on duty.

PC Archit Sharma’s crime, which took place on December 7, 2020, was described as a “treason” by a senior official.

After an investigation, he was charged on July 28, 2021.

Sharma, who was part of the North Area Command Unit, was convicted of sexual assault at Wood Green Crown Court on March 6. He resigned four days later.

On Friday he was sentenced by the same court to 16 months in prison and will be placed on the sex offenders register for ten years.

He was also given a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim for ten years and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £156.

The former officer will now be placed on the College of Policing’s banned list. Those on the list must not be employed by the police, local police authorities (PCCs), the Independent Office for Police Conduct or Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.

Detective Chief Superintendent Caroline Haines, responsible for local policing in Enfield and Haringey, said: “Former PC Sharma’s behavior was abhorrent. His actions were a betrayal of our police values.”

“I hope this result shows how seriously we take reports of sexual crimes, regardless of who the perpetrator is.”

“Following his conviction, we initiated a process for an expedited hearing where the allegations of misconduct were confirmed.”
