CIO employee and self-proclaimed prophet confronted with rape allegations

An agent of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) was arraigned before Judge Marehwanazvo Gofa in Harare on Thursday. He is accused of raping a woman who had visited his shrine seeking spiritual guidance.

Defendant George Goromondo, 26, was granted bail of $200. He will appear in court on July 8 to set a possible trial date pending the completion of the investigation, reported NewsDay.

According to the allegations, the plaintiff (name withheld for professional reasons) went to Goromondo’s shrine in Dzivaresekwa, Harare, sometime last month to seek spiritual help.

The defendant allegedly asked the plaintiff to return at around 6 p.m. with a clay pot, rice, a white cloth and clay soil.

When the plaintiff returned to the shrine at the agreed time, the defendant reportedly sent away other women who were there.

He is said to have prepared an ointment syrup and rubbed the plaintiff with it.

After the cleaning operation, Goromondo offered to accompany the plaintiff home and she agreed.

On the way, however, Goromondo is said to have stopped his vehicle and demanded sex from the plaintiff, which he, however, refused.

Before the rape, the accused is said to have presented an ID card identifying him as a CIO officer.

After this heinous act, Goromondo allegedly threatened the plaintiff not to tell anyone about the matter and told her to return to his shrine the next day to continue praying.

The plaintiff informed her grandmother about the sexual assault, who accompanied her to the police, which led to the arrest of the defendant.

Charges have been brought against Lancelot Mutsokoti.
