The Dundy County Sheriff’s Office reported an accident between a train and a semi-truck just before noon (11:43 a.m.) Friday. It occurred near mile marker 2 of U.S. Highway 34. Sheriff Ryan King says there were no injuries when a BNSF train collided with a semi-truck hauling an excavator.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the tractor-trailer was too high in the middle of the railroad crossing and could no longer move. The driver left the tractor-trailer before it was struck by the train. The BNSF employees in the locomotive had observed the tractor-trailer beforehand and took cover in the locomotive.

Sheriff King said the tractor-trailer, trailer, excavator and at least one BNSF machine appeared to have “significant damage that could disable the drivers.”

The Haigler and Benkelman fire departments and the Dundy County ambulance responded to the scene.
