Swimming pool remains closed after 7 people hospitalized following chemical spill at Brimhall Aquatic Center in Mesa

Seven people were injured in a chemical spill at the Brimhall Aquatic Complex on the morning of June 6. The pool will be closed on June 7 as cleanup efforts continue.

The rest of the Brimhall campus reopened on June 7, and Mesa Parks and Recreation camp activities resumed at the school. A movie night and dinner scheduled for June 7 has been postponed until June 14, according to a news release from the city of Mesa.

The chemical spill occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. and the campus was evacuated while the Mesa Fire Department and Medical Department were called to the scene at 4949 E. Southern Ave. to assist with the emergency response. The incident was upgraded to a first alarm, and hazardous materials responders were called to the scene.

Five Mesa employees and two program participants were injured in the incident and treated by paramedics. The victims were transported to local hospitals for further treatment.

As of June 6, the Mesa Fire Department and Medical Department were still on site, working with the Arizona Department of Environmental Protection. A hazardous waste disposal company has been hired to clean up the site, the press release said.
