Bear killed illegally in Nescopeck

NESCOPECK, Pennsylvania – An investigation is underway following the illegal killing of a bear in Luzerne County.

This is a common sight for people in northeastern and central Pennsylvania this time of year: black bears approaching garbage cans or strolling through the neighborhood.

“Bears have to be respected; they are fast and powerful animals. This is the peak time for bear activity. If anything, we will see more activity later in the month,” said Travis Lau, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Neighbors told Newswatch 16 it was unusual to see a bear in the area, but it did not behave aggressively. The game commission said the bear was later shot by someone who lived nearby.

Authorities are now reminding the public that all wildlife in the state of Pennsylvania is protected.

“This includes bears. Outside of the established hunting season, licensed hunters are generally prohibited from killing wild animals using legal methods,” Lau added.

Lau said the case was currently under investigation and could not provide further details.

“If you find yourself facing a bear, simply alert it to your presence, whether by whistling or speaking quietly. Any encounter is good and to your advantage, as long as you can remain calm,” Lau explained.

If you are concerned about a bear or notice any aggression, your best bet is to call the game commission so game wardens can come and check on things, officials say.
