Jamaica: No injuries reported in American Airlines flight accident

The plane reportedly landed hard and veered off the runway. It is unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.

An American Airlines flight reportedly skidded off the runway while landing at Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) in Kingston late Thursday.

American Airlines Flight 850, scheduled to arrive at 7:32 p.m., landed nearly two hours later than expected due to delays at Miami International Airport.

Upon arrival at NMIA, the aircraft reportedly made a hard landing and veered off the runway. It is unclear if anyone was injured in the incident, but it is said that the aircraft sustained significant damage to the engine and landing lights.

According to local press reports, the aircraft’s engines, landing lights and other components were damaged in the incident. It is currently unclear how seriously the passengers were injured.

In a brief statement Friday morning, the airline said: “American Airlines Flight 850 from Miami (MIA) to Kingston, Jamaica (KIN) briefly departed the runway after landing. The aircraft taxied to the gate under its own power and passengers deplaned normally. Safety is our top priority and we apologize to our passengers for their experience.”

Although the airline did not provide any information about why the plane left the runway, a passenger who wished to remain anonymous told the press that there was significant turbulence during the flight due to weather conditions.

Both the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority and American Airlines emergency teams are said to be on site.
