City committee on Atlanta water crisis postponed

A city committee wanting more answers about Atlanta’s water crisis will have to wait another month for answers.

The Atlanta City Council’s Utilities Committee was scheduled to meet June 11 with watershed officials and other authorities to discuss last weekend’s water main breaks that left much of the city without water for several days.

On Friday afternoon, the Atlanta City Council’s communications department sent out a press release and announced on social media that the June 11 meeting would now be held on July 9.

Councilmember Antonio Lewis, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, announced the June 11 meeting at the June 3 council meeting. He said the meeting was necessary “to address the state of emergency in our city.”

Lewis said city code allows council committees to hold hearings and investigations into city operations. Committees can subpoena witnesses, take testimony and demand that documents be turned over, Lewis said.

Lewis could not immediately be reached for comment.
