Scholz’s ally attacked in library amid political violence in Germany

A Berlin senator, a leading figure in Olaf Scholz’s SPD party, was attacked in a library, the latest in a series of attacks on politicians in Germany.

Franziska Giffey, a former mayor of Berlin, was hospitalized after a man hit her in the head and neck with a bag containing something hard and then ran away. She was later released. The Police State Protection Service, which deals with politically motivated crime, has started an investigation.

In a statement on social media, Giffey condemned a “fair game culture in which politically active and committed people in our country are increasingly exposed to seemingly justified and acceptable attacks.”
