NYPD officer arrested for allegedly shooting man in apparent driving aggression incident

The NYPD officer is accused of, among other things, attempted first-degree murder.

A New York police officer was arrested for allegedly shooting another driver in an apparent incident of driving aggression, prosecutors said.

Officer Hieu Tran, 27, was taken into custody at the New York Police Department on Thursday in connection with the shooting last month in Voorhees Township, New Jersey, the Camden County District Attorney’s Office said.

Tran is said to have shot a 30-year-old man on the night of May 17. The victim is still in the hospital, prosecutors said on Friday.

Tran’s NYPD-issued gun was linked to the crime scene, prosecutors said.

Police also used surveillance video and cellphone records to identify Tran as a suspect, prosecutors said.

According to prosecutors, Tran is charged with attempted first-degree murder, second-degree aggravated assault and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

According to New York ABC station WABC, Tran is a member of the NYPD’s public relations team and was off-duty at the time of the shooting.

He was suspended without pay in accordance with department policy, WABC reported.
