In Buffalo, Senator Gillibrand speaks of a bill on the financing of daycares to support the police

Buffalo, NY (WIVB) – American senator Kirsten Gillibrand visited Buffalo on Friday to announce a plan aimed at obtaining federal childcare funding.

The Gillibrand conference took place at the headquarters of the Buffalo police department, on short street, where it announced the law on the provision of childcare services to the police. She said the law would provide $ 24 million for each of the next five financial years for childcare services in support of the police.

If it is promulgated, the law would allow subsidies of up to $ 3 million to the various organizations responsible for applying the law to establish childcare programs.

20 percent of the total amount of subsidies would be reserved for departments with less than 200 agents.

“Police often work prolonged hours according to a non -traditional schedule,” said Gillibrand’s office. “Recent surveys show that almost 20 % of police are looking to leave the profession, and in a major metropolitan police service, more than half of the police said they had to leave or be absent from their work due to problems Childcare.

During the Gillibrand conference, she explained how disproportionately it was the women. In 2021, only 12 % of police in the United States were women, according to an initiative called 30 × 30.

“Offering childcare services is a powerful tool to attract and retain new talents, and it is an essential way to promote public security while maintaining a stable law enforcement,” said Gillibrand .
