Milford man charged with assault with vehicle after crash injures police officer

DOVER, Delaware – A serious traffic accident in Dover led to the arrest of a Milford man on numerous charges, including assault with a vehicle.

Tuesday afternoon, Dover Police were called to assist the Capital Police Department with an erratic driver at the Dover Department of Motor Vehicles. Capital Police had attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle backed up and intentionally rammed the occupied police vehicle, injuring the officer.

The officer was transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment of his injuries.

The vehicle then reportedly left the parking lot and headed north on North DuPont Highway, crossing the median at one point and then traveling north in the southbound lanes. The driver struck several vehicles in the area of ​​East Loockerman Street, causing the vehicle to break down. The driver then fled on foot, but was arrested by Dover police a short time later.

As a result of the accident, a 48-year-old man and a 22-year-old man were taken to Bayhealth Kent Campus for treatment of their injuries.

The driver, 26-year-old Djerryson Charles, was arrested by Dover Police and charged with three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of first-degree assault, resisting arrest, hit and run causing personal injury, reckless driving, driving under the influence, and several traffic violations. He was held at SCI on $37,600 bail. In addition, Charles was charged by Capital Police with first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, and two counts of second-degree conspiracy. He was held at SCI on $25,000 unsecured bail.
