Surveillance video shows Miami man shot during burglary in front of his granddaughter – NBC 6 South Florida

New surveillance video captured the moment a Miami man was shot dead in front of his granddaughter during a burglary Thursday morning.

The shooting occurred around 8:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Southwest 5th Street in Little Havana.

Miami Police officials said there appeared to be a burglary involving a girl, believed to be a minor, who was alone in an apartment. When she heard someone inside, she called her mother.

“The mother then calls the grandfather. The grandfather is only a few houses away. He runs over, goes into the apartment, and comes face to face with the perpetrator. A scuffle ensues and the perpetrator shoots the grandfather once,” said Michael Vega, spokesman for the Miami police.

The video shows a man walking up the stairs to the apartment. A moment later, the grandfather is seen falling down the same stairs and lying motionless at the bottom of the stairs.

Police are searching for a suspect who shot a man in front of his granddaughter during a burglary in Miami on Thursday morning.

The girl is seen running down the stairs, seeing her grandfather lying on the floor and running away. A man wearing a hat is also seen fleeing the scene as neighbors come out of their houses to see what is going on.

Police and firefighters responded and the man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, the grandfather was about 60 years old. His name was not released.

The suspect fled the scene on foot after the shooting and police are still searching for him.

“We are still trying to identify him, get information about the perpetrator and find out what his intentions were when he went in there, since there was an underage female in the apartment,” Vega said.

Neighbors said they saw a masked man running away and heard cries for help.

“I ran across the street and to the stairs over there. I guess it was her grandfather who had been shot a couple of times in the stomach,” said neighbor Nate Chapman. “He was lying on his back, motionless, bleeding.”

Police said the girl helped with the investigation. Vega said it was also a teaching moment.

“We always tell people: If you’re in a situation like this, it’s OK to call mom, dad, a friend or a neighbor. But before you do that, call 911. Let’s be the ones who risk our lives to save yours,” Vega said.
