Suspects connected to over 30 car break-ins lead police on a chase in a stolen car before crashing near I-77S

MOORESVILLE, NC (NEWS FROM QUEEN CITY) — Four suspects involved in more than 30 car break-ins and at least three auto thefts will face charges following a chase and crash, authorities said.

The ordeal began at 4:22 a.m. on Thursday, June 6, when Mooresville police received a call about a vehicle break-in in the Legacy Village neighborhood.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw four people fleeing in a stolen 2018 Audi. Mooresville police followed the stolen vehicle until it became disabled. Then all four occupants got out of the car and ran into a wooded area near Hillside Drive.

As police began searching for the group on foot, three of the four suspects were observed fleeing the scene again in another stolen vehicle, this time a 2021 Kia.

The three suspects were subsequently pursued again by Mooresville police until the stolen vehicle crashed as they attempted to merge onto southbound I-77 at Exit 33, they said.

After the accident and a short foot chase, the three suspects were arrested and taken to the CMC main building for treatment of their injuries from the accident.

The fourth suspect, who was in the wooded area near Hillside Drive, was also arrested a short time later, police said.

A Mooresville police officer suffered a minor head injury while arresting the suspects. The officer has since been treated and released from the hospital.

The suspects involved in Thursday’s chase and crash are linked to more than 30 car break-ins, at least three car thefts and the theft of firearms, police said.

The investigation into this series of crimes is still ongoing, Mooresville police said.
