The man whose face was featured on news websites around the world after he raped and killed University of Cape Town student Uyinene Mrwetyana in 2019 is back in the dock – this time for the attempted rape of a nursing student in June 2014.

The case of nineteen-year-old Mrwetyana became the flagship of the #AmINext movement as the crime sparked public outrage.

Little did the public know, however, that the man who raped her, Luyanda Botha, had been accused of attempted rape of the 21-year-old nursing student six years earlier – a case that was eventually struck off the court register.
