RTO officials: Four RTO officials suspended over registration issues | Mumbai News

Mumbai: State transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar on Thursday said he has suspended four employees of the Andheri RTO for allegedly being involved in tampering with online data (Vahan portal) for city registration of buses — whose past records, including registration and chassis numbers, were “fake”. A case has been registered with the police in this connection and the police are conducting further investigation, he said. In April, Bhimanwar had constituted a six-member inquiry commission to probe the case of fake registrations of buses in western suburbs. The commission, headed by senior RTO official Pradeep Shinde, submitted its final report to the government this week, following which the decision to suspend the employees was taken on Thursday. “I have received the report which mentions certain misconducts of employees who are senior officers of the RTO. Without valid documents in hand and with the help of access to an online system, they seem to have committed the offence. Based on the facts that are prima facie evident, I have suspended them today. “The police will also investigate to find out if any strangers are involved in this case,” Bhimanwar said.Sources said a total of 61 buses, most of them with Telangana registration numbers, and 25 heavy commercial vehicles were found with fake registration documents and tampered chassis numbers. The vehicle owners have been questioned and have pinned the blame on RTO agents in other states, the sources added. While the clerks are accused of feeding the data into the system to generate local registration numbers (MH-02), this came to light when one of the RTO officials checked the authenticity of the old documents. The case then went before the transport commissioner, who ordered an inquiry and subsequently a case was registered with the police as well.In a similar case a few months ago, 34 buses and 26 trucks with fake engine and chassis numbers from other states, including Arunachal Pradesh, were re-registered at the Vasai RTO. The Vasai RTO verified the vehicle details with the automobile manufacturers and filed a police complaint in December. It asked other state RTOs to keep a close watch on such vehicles and cases were found at the Andheri RTO.
