Only Western New York Moms Say These Things

Here are some things only Western New York moms say:

Behave or I’ll take you to Father Baker.

The treat of all treats in Western New York. Father Baker was a home for troubled youth and if you misbehave, there’s a good chance Mom will threaten to drop you off there unless you start behaving properly.

MAKE SURE TO PUT THE WONDERBREAD BAGS IN YOUR WINTER BOOTS

How did moms in Western New York keep their children’s feet dry when playing in the snow? Wonderful plastic bread bags. Every kid in Western New York grew up being reminded to put a bag on their feet before putting on their snow boots.

IF YOU DON’T FINISH YOUR DINNER, YOU CAN’T HAVE A HEART OF PASTRY

Buffalo is known for its food, but when you were a kid, chances are you were a very picky eater. But of course, all that came out when we wanted dessert. For me growing up, the best treat was a homemade pastry heart. Crunchy and gooey at the same time, mom threatened not to let us have one if we didn’t finish dinner.

TRY ON YOUR HALLOWEEN COSTUME TO MAKE SURE IT FITS YOUR WINTER COAT

Growing up here in Western New York sometimes meant you had to go trick-or-treating in a few inches or feet of snow. Only moms in Western New York had to have their kids try on their Halloween costumes over a winter jacket, just in case.

NO, YOU CANNOT GO TO CANADA WITH YOUR FRIENDS

One of the benefits for kids growing up in Western New York is that Canada is only about 20 minutes away. For teens, this means you can cross the border and drink legally when you turn 19 instead of waiting until you turn 21 in the United States. How many children’s plans were abandoned because their mothers wouldn’t let them cross the border?
