Unknown man with walking stick stabs 55-year-old woman from behind in unprovoked attack near Central Park: police

An unknown assailant stabbed a 55-year-old woman from behind over the weekend just steps from the northern end of Central Park, authorities said.

The victim was walking on the sidewalk at the corner of St. Nicholas Avenue and West 111th Street in Harlem shortly before 11 a.m. on Saturday when the attacker approached her and stabbed her in the left lower back with an “unknown sharp object,” police said.

The victim and suspect did not appear to have spoken to each other before the ambush in broad daylight, police said.

The attack occurred just steps from the northeast side of Central Park, near the Harlem Meer – a man-made lake – and the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, a visitor center run by the Central Park Conservancy.

The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Morningside, where her condition was listed as stable.

Surveillance images released on Thursday afternoon show the attacker, who is still on the run, walking with a stick.

He is described as having dark skin and a medium build and was last seen wearing a black hat, a light shirt, blue pants and white and black sneakers.
