Apparent system error leads to near-fatal incident at Universal Orlando Resort

One of Universal Orlando Resort’s most famous locations almost became the scene of a gruesome incident that sparked debate online.

Like all Universal Destinations & Experiences locations worldwide, Florida-based Universal Resort has countless systems and measures in place to ensure the health and safety of all guests and employees at the park.

These systems and measures can be found throughout the parks, not just on board the exciting rides at Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, Universal Volcano Bay and soon at Universal Epic Universe.

Surprisingly, a guest recently shared a video of a gruesome incident at Universal Studios Florida that was narrowly avoided due to an alleged glitch in the attraction’s security system.

TikTok user @bananabunny18 recently posted a video of the giant dragon emblazoned over Gringotts Bank in Diagon Alley, the immersive space inspired by JK Rowling’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Florida.

The video seemed to be a typical performance of the fire-breathing dragon that regularly appears in the Harry Potter-inspired area. However, the user became nervous when he noticed a bird flying dangerously close to the giant dragon, not a second before it fired a fireball.

The bird reacted immediately and flew away from the amazing animal, narrowly avoiding a gruesome incident in the park. You can watch the video below or click here to watch.

Onlookers were shocked by the scene, although some said it was more common than one would think. A supposed former Universal Orlando Resort employee commented, “As someone who worked at Diagon when it opened and then for 6 years, this has happened to me. More often in the first year of opening though.”

One TikTok user agreed, mentioning that this has happened a few times. “I once saw it fall in front of a family with small children.” Another user added, “I know the bird reacted so quickly, you can even feel the heat when you’re standing under it.”

One viewer mentioned that a theme park employee told him that the fantastic animal has a sensor that cancels the effect if a gust of wind or a bird passes in front of it, in order to prevent accidents or unpleasant scenes at the Orlando theme park. However, in this case, that sensor seems to have failed.

Despite this security measure, one user commented: “Can’t they change it to something that just looks like fire but doesn’t harm birds? That seems like a simple solution.”

The original author responded that, according to the comments, the fire-breathing dragon guarding Gringotts Bank has a sensor, but the bird in the video may have been flying too low to be detected in time.

Of course, meeting this demand to change the iconic creature above Diagon Alley would require tremendous effort on the part of the creative teams behind Universal Destinations & Experiences’ projects and is highly unlikely.

Universal Orlando Resort is home to numerous attractions inspired by popular franchises, such as Jurassic World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the Fast & Furious film series – despite the historic backlash to the last one.

Unfortunately, the company’s constant efforts to improve and innovate may result in the permanent closure of some iconic attractions, such as the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit at Universal Studios Florida, which is rumored to close permanently in 2025.

But fear not. If these rumors are confirmed, Universal Destinations & Experiences will undoubtedly create a breathtaking experience to replace the legendary roller coaster.
