First sexually transmitted ringworm case reported in the USA

(WJW) – A sexually transmitted form of ringworm has been reported for the first time in the United States.

According to a case report published Wednesday by JAMA Dermatology, the patient was a man in his 30s from New York City who said he had sex with multiple men during a trip to England, Greens and California, Fox News reports.

According to Fox News, the patient developed a red, itchy rash on his legs, groin and buttocks upon returning home to New York City.

According to the case report, the rare fungus is called Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII.

“The rash resembles eczema, a common condition that causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin, unlike the typical ringworm fungal infection of the skin, which forms in circles,” Fox News reported.

In 2023, doctors in France reported 13 similar cases. Twelve of these cases involved men who had sex with other men, according to the CDC.

According to Fox News, the New York City man responded positively to standard anti-fungal medications, but it took nearly five months for the infection to fully heal.
