Does police spending reduce crime? Louisiana is one of the ten US states with the worst ROI

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – Louisiana ranks among the top 10 states with the worst return on investment in police spending, according to a new study.

High Rise Financial’s study used FBI crime data and U.S. Census Bureau reports on state and local government spending to analyze how effectively funds are being used to reduce crime rates.


At the top of the list were Nebraska, Arkansas and South Carolina.

In Nebraska, 149 crimes are committed for every $1,000 spent on police services. In comparison, Arkansas, which ranks second, recorded 135 crimes per $1,000 of police spending, and South Carolina recorded 111 crimes per $1,000 of police spending.

The state of Louisiana ranked seventh with 93 crimes per $1,000 spent on police, the report said. Overall, $34.9 million is spent per 100,000 residents to combat 3,235 crimes.
