Today is expected to be the hottest day of the year in all of Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Mostly sunny and unseasonably hot weather is expected across Arizona today. In Phoenix, it will likely be the hottest day of the year so far, with a record-breaking afternoon temperature of 46 degrees.

A very strong high pressure system will bring record and record-breaking temperatures across the country today, with even Flagstaff expected to see highs of nearly 90 degrees.

A heat warning is in effect for the lower elevations of the state, including the Valley, until Friday night. Today and tomorrow are also the first days of weather.

A high pressure system over Arizona and a low pressure system off the coast of the Baja Peninsula are bringing a weak southeasterly flow of moisture into Arizona. For the valley, this means high cloud cover for the next few days. Isolated thunderstorms are possible at higher elevations. No significant rain is expected, but gusty winds and dry lightning increase the risk of wildfires and their spread throughout the state.

By Saturday, high pressure is expected to ease somewhat, causing temperatures to drop. Phoenix is expected to see highs of 44 degrees on Friday, 42 degrees on Saturday and 41 degrees on Sunday. Temperatures are expected to warm up again to 43 degrees and above by the middle of next week.
